A Note From the Queen

Did Dawn Start The South Beach Diet
And is she sticking with it?

I did, I did, I started the South Beach diet last month. I knew I would need a buddy to get me through the first two weeks. I was scared. My subconscious mind was saying, "No, I don't want to change, I want to keep things as they are." But I knew I had to change, it is not healthy for me to stay at this weight.

The first day was the most difficult. I felt tired and hungry, because I was used to getting my energy from carbs not from fat. (This will be explained more in the article "Good verses Bad Carbs" under the section, "Girlfriend's Recommend") The second day was more fun. I started discovering food I could enjoy. The third day was the hump day, the program started to get easier to follow. Now, I have been on the diet for almost four weeks and I am feeling good. I am not as hungry and have a lot more energy. I really like all the low carb products they now have, I am not feeling deprived. I feel like I should be able to keep with it. I like the way the doctor of the South Beach Diet says, "If you happen to eat too many carbs one day, just get back on low carb eating and you're on tract again."

Well, Dawn how much have you lost? Oh, yeah, I just weighed this morning. I have lost twelve pounds! That is three pounds a week.

Classes

Girlfriends all need support in one way or another. We love to talk, share, and help each other. This is what makes us feel strong, independent, and confident. This is where I am going to post classes, and support groups. Let me know the kinds of classes or support groups you are interested in. For example: Learning Feng Shui, relationships, family, career, beauty, diet, healthy cooking, eating raw, wine tasting, to name a few. The sky is the limit; we can have anything we want.healthqueen@fountainofhealth.com

Feature Article

We Crave Sugar,
But Is It Really Our Fault?

We are as a nation getting fatter. Just take a look at any beach or the mall. Two thirds of adults are overweight. The rates for African Americans and Latinos are even higher.

A Time/ABC news pole showed that fifty-eight percent of Americans would like to loose weight, nearly twice the percentage that felt that way in 1951.

It wouldn't be such a big deal being heavy if it were simply just a matter of looking good. But having extra weight increases the total medical tab for illnesses to $117 billion a year. Risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, infertility, gall-bladder disease, osteoarthritis, and many forms of cancer are some of the diseases caused by carrying around excess weight. The American Medical Association reported in March of 2004, that poor diet and physical inactivity could soon overtake tobacco as the leading cause of preventable death in the United States

So why is this happening? The obvious, almost trivial answer, is that we eat too much high calorie food and don't burn it off. People spend billions of dollars to try to find a way to get rid of the poundage. We give it to health clubs, liposuction, gastric bypass operations and drugs to melt it away.

It would be nice to blame it on someone or something. The fact is, everything that is unhealthy to eat us just too convenient to purchase, sugar is everywhere. Fat calories and sugar tastes good.

In the old days, if you wanted a cookie you would have to bake it yourself. It is true the more convenience we have the fatter we seem to get. And what about Television., Radio and Magazine commercials beguiling us every day and night with advertisements of fatty foods? How are we expected to ward off this evil doing?

Well they say the ultimate reason for obesity may be rooted deep within our genes. We got our sweet tooth from our ancestors, who probably ate too much as their cousins, the apes did, foraging for fruits, nuts, and other vegetation.

When fruit was in season. it was a source of energy. We ate the sweet fruit in abundance when it was available, thus developing a taste for sweetness that was pass on down. Because of this fruit gorging, our ancestors would put on weight, thus enabling the species to continue during hard times of famine. It is in our genes to want something sweet to continue on with our species.

Some believe that is why our brain grew, because the glucose now in our diet, which is what the brain only lives off of twenty-four hours a day. Then we started craving meat, which gave us more nutrients to fully develop our brain.

Of course the meat back then was not grain fed to increase the fat in the meat either. We really had to work for our food. Until the last one hundred years, cars and other machinery have dramatically reduced the need for physical labor. Exercise has vanished from everyday life, the technology of food production has become much more sophisticated. I know you must have heard of how much sugar each of us consumes each year, one hundred fifty pounds per capita.

And thanks to mass production, all that sweet and fat stuff is relatively cheap, and absurdly convenient. Unless you make a determined effort, you'll probably choose the path of least resistance.

Evolving during the time of scarcity, humans have developed an instinctive desire for basic tastes of sweets, fat and salt. There is still that part in us that is telling us, from our ancestors, food is hard to come by, eat it now so your species and your children can live on.

The food companies have made a killing on this basic instinct. The obesity epidemic is not a threat but a business opportunity. There is hope. We are smoking less today than ever before because of publicity about the health risks of smoking. Also, more lives then ever have been saved due to the publication of seat belt safety. As long as we realize we are fighting evolution, it is going to be hard to say no to sweets, fat and salt. But we can do it! With more, "no thank yous", and one walk around the block at a time.

The Health Queen and Girlfriends Recommend

Good Verses Bad Carbs
Which is Good and Which is Bad?

Good carbs are the ones that are not processed. They are whole grains, beans, legumes. These are good because the carbohydrate still has the whole grain fiber in tack, which makes it go into the blood stream slowly. not rising the insulin levels.

Bad carbs go into the blood stream quickly. Bad cards are anything made with sugar, corn syrup, or processed white flour. When bad carbs are consumed. the pancreas produces insulin to combat the quick rise in blood glucose. Insulin acts like a shovel pulling the sugar out of the blood and storing it as fat. When you eat less carbs, your pancreas does not produce insulin, instead your pancreas produces glycogen, which is what burns fat for energy.

We just installed the Oxygen Steam Sauna two weeks ago. I will be sending out more information about it soon. It is a wonderful addition to detoxifying.

Why Oxygen Sauna?
Using the steam sauna with oxygen allows the steam to surround the body, and oxygen can be introduced through the skin. Humid heat opens the pores, which allows the oxygen through the skin to the bloodstream, where it can travel to the fat and lymph tissue. It is very important to cleanse the lymph tissue of toxins and the oxygen/steam sauna is the easiest and best way to accomplish this. The extra oxygen is utilized to detoxify dermal cells and remove wastes with enhanced blood circulation while oxygen kills germs and bacteria on your skin.

Hippocrates, the founder of Western medicine, said more than two-thousand years ago, "Give me the power to create a fever in the body and I shall cure any disease."
