WHAT ARE CRAVINGS?
We all get them from time to time, but what is our body really trying to tell us? Is there an inadequacy or deficiency that may be present? Is it really our body or our mind that is causing the craving? These are all questions that need to be considered. A lot of times we unconsciously grab something sweet or salty, just as a habitual response. It can occur after dinner when our sweet tooth is talking or mid-day when our mind and body are ready for a siesta and we need a "pick me up". Cravings occur when we are emotionally distraught, stressed out or need comfort. Even our past experiences can cause a craving to come about. These types of cravings are actually created by the mind, which then triggers a physical response in the body leading to a mental, emotional and physical response to your desire.

Are you craving refined sugar?
Sugar can be described as an extreme food, meaning it can throw your body out of balance. It is within this imbalance however, that we find ourselves hungry for more? But why do we crave that which makes us ill? Oddly enough, this substance is in fact a drug. It is a legal, largely over looked drug that can lead to addiction and dependence. Furthermore, it is this decadent, mouth watering treat that is a main culprit to the large amount of disease present today.
The good thing is that much of our sugar cravings can be curbed with certain diet and behavior modifications. This begins with changing our relationship to sugar. Eating a healthier form of sugar doesn't equate to neglect, but rather self-love. A shift in the way we think about sugar and it's affect on our body and mind is imperative for behavior modifications. Very rarely do we consider this, as we become the victim of our choices. Awareness in healthy eating habits is a choice that is empowering. It is not based on the notion of being good or bad. These distinctions create freedom over our addictive patterns as they bring about awareness and a connection to self. Body and mind friendly sugars include Agave nectar, Raw honey, Brown rice syrup, Maple grade B syrup, Barley malt, Rapadura, Stevia, and Xylitol.

Are you craving fat?
Believe it or not, fat will not make you fat. It's quite the contrary. The right forms of fat can actually melt pounds away and increase your metabolism. They also support proper brain function, protect cell membranes for proper cell function, promote hormone balance, increase serotonin levels, increase fat-soluble vitamin absorption, increase immunity and have antimicrobial properties to enhance gut health. With a lack of fat a variety of health problems arise including low energy, difficulty in concentration, depression, weight gain and mineral deficiencies.
If you are craving fat, it is probably because your body needs it. However, there is a difference between healthy and unhealthy fats. The unhealthy fats that need to be avoided are all hydrogenated or trans-fats, margarine, fake buttery spreads, vegetable shortening and an excess of polyunsaturated fats better known as Omega-6 essential fatty acid. Omega-6 is needed in the diet, but conventional vegetable oil is too processed and becomes rancid. Trans-fats are also rancid. Rancidity equates to free radicals. They cause DNA/RNA damage, wrinkles and pre-mature aging, as well as initiate a build up of arterial plaque and attack cell membranes.
Healthy fats include coconut oil, palm kernel oil and butter. Each of these supports a healthy immune system, promotes a healthy gut, promotes essential fatty acid utilization and is vital for healthy bones. Oleic, olive, almond, cashew, pecan, peanut and avocado oil are monounsaturated oils that are also healthy forms of fat. Evening Primrose oil, Black currant and Borage oil are non-rancid omega-6 oils that produce prostaglandins for hormone regulation. Lastly, cod liver oil is an excellent source of omega-3's which is more stable than flaxseed and better assimilated. Omega-3's are essential for brain function, development and concentration. They balance hormones, help relieve depression and are also responsible for preventing eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, hair, and peeling nails.

Are you craving salt?
Contrary to popular belief, salt is actually a necessary proponent of a healthy body. Your body needs salt. Natural sea salt contains 60 different trace minerals. These minerals are the basis for vitamin, enzymes and protein formation. They are needed in small amounts, but indeed needed. Table salt on the other hand has been stripped of these vital nutrients, refined into small granules, bleached to obtain its snow white color and then enriched with iodine. This causes a disruption in the body as it needs these missing minerals for digestion and absorption. From this, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and heart disease can come about. The body strips the bones of minerals in attempt to bring balance back into the blood stream.
Processed salt is used in massed produced packaged foods for flavor and preservation. This form of sodium however, will not curb your craving for salt for very long. It will actually cause you to crave more of it as minerals are stripped from you body. It is an unforgiving cycle. The healthy forms of salt include sea salt, gray or pink, and Celtic salt. You only need a pinch, so use it sparingly.

Are you craving liquids?
Have you ever been thirsty; guzzled down a soda or sugary drink and notice you are still craving more liquids shortly after? Quenching your thirst can only be accomplished by drinking high quality, filtered water. It doesn't just want liquids, but rather the same liquid of which it is composed of. Drinking water can remedy a number of health conditions such as headaches, kidney stones, and bladder infections. It helps to flush the body of toxins which in turn curbs cravings for sweets and other non-nutritive foods. Above all, it helps with weight loss and increased energy. Keep bottled water with you at all times so you can sip it throughout the day. When the water enters your body, recognize how your body responds. Drinking water when we are thirsty provides an immediate sense of replenishment and satisfaction.

Are you craving "primary food"?
Primary food isn't food for the body, but food for the soul. This includes a balanced lifestyle in areas concerning career, physical activity, spirituality and relationships. Many times if one or more of these areas is unbalanced or unsatisfying, we turn to food as a means to fill the inner portion of ourselves that is starving. Look to see if any of this applies to you and your current life circumstances. Where in your life are you not being feed? Is it your job or personal relationship? Or is it a disconnection with your body or higher power? What are these areas crying out for? Discovering this and creating a balanced lifestyle is not an easy task. It takes work and self-dedication. Yet this type of food is what really provides lasting happiness and true authenticity. You deserve to be loved, to perform the work that you love, to provide love to your body and have a loving connection with the divine. Becoming aware of the areas in your life that need nurturing is the first step and seeking out support in these areas is the next. It is difficult to conjure up the energy and put forth action alone. Know that you are not alone and support will be provided as soon as you are ready to ask for it!

Obviously, having a craving is more dynamic than we may have thought, but conscious awareness of our patterns can bring about healthy changes and resolve a lot of our unhealthy eating habits. The first step toward awareness starts with stopping. Before you grab for that sweet indulgence or savory snack, ask yourself "What is this really all about?" Ask your body, "What are you really looking for?"

Are you really hungry or just bored?
Eating when we are not hungry is just another way to avoid or fill a void that is not being fulfilled. This form of eating can keep you distracted from other areas of your life that are being neglected. It is a way to occupy the mind. This can be very dangerous to your health as well as your ability to lead a happy, healthy life. In this way, food becomes a drug and is abused rather than used for the purpose of nourishment. The next time you reach for something when you are truly not hunger, STOP and ask yourself "What is really going on here?"

Testimonials

I wanted to write a letter to acknowledge the help that you all have given me over the past year while visiting the Fountain of Health.

Months ago, I made an appointment for a colonic. I had never had one before and I heard that you felt better after one. I have historically been a chronic dieter, always trying the newest fad way of eating because I wanted to feel good and lose the same five pounds. I eat well and exercise regularly. I had a stressful job for years and had started to gain weight around my middle, which I knew was from stress. At this point, I was practicing a vegan diet and my face was extremely broken out.

During my colonic appointment, we discussed my diet. Right away, Dawn told me that I had too much soy in my diet. Because of my active work out schedule, I needed to make sure I got enough protein. Being a vegan and traveling a lot, how I got my protein was with lots of tofu and soy nuts! Soy has a lot of hormones in it. Within two weeks of cutting most of the soy out of my diet, my face cleared up. Amazing! We discussed why I wanted to be a vegan and it was really due to a book I had read on what additives and hormones are in the food we eat. I learned to eat organic and really look at how our ancestors lived and ate. They ate meat and eggs and dairy. Gradually I introduced organic meats and eggs into my diet and I felt so much better. The regular colonics made me feel better too.

While I felt better, I still did not feel good. I was tired and often bloated and I had irregular bowels. With the help of Dawn, I really had to take a look at my behavior with regard to eating and how what I ate made me feel. I ate way to fast, which often gave me a stomach-ache. I also craved carbs when my body really wanted protein. I had little fat in my diet and learned that having some coconut oil or butter (isn't that forbidden) with my meal actually sustained me longer. I felt so much better after eating slower, smaller meals with some added fat.

The process of discipline and really paying attention to your body is not easy, but the work is so worth it. I love muffins. I feel crummy after I eat them and so tired. I never realized this. But if I just have half with some cheese or an egg, I feel good and not hungry for a while. I have also learned that restricting is bad. You eventually eat what you have been craving and you eat a lot of it. So if you want it, have some and savor it. And if you eat it slow and really pay attention to how you feel during and after, you may discover that you don't feel that great and next time you won't even want it.

I also worked with Dawn on muscle testing and have added natural whole food supplements to my diet. These have really helped as well. I am looking forward to continuing my work on feeling healthy and good. I plan on working with Dawn on eating according to my blood type and getting regular colonics. I have also been practicing rhythmic eating, eating healthy breakfasts and lunches with lighter dinners and never carb only meals!

I am so grateful to Dawn and team. Their support, kind words, genuine care and hugs have helped me get through a rough time in my life and got me back on the right paths. They really have changed my life!
